FAQs

What sort of 'challenges' will we face?
As we have stated, it is impossible (and far less fun) for us to provide a definitive answer to this question. Further, we believe an element of mystery/surprise adds to the flavour of this event series. The challenge zones are predominantly made up of assault course type obstacles, orienteering tasks, and mental challenges. Past event photographs will give you a clue or two but we are always developing new challenges which also vary from venue to venue so expect the unexpected!
What happens if there's a challenge that I really don't fancy?
Whilst we encourage people to go The Whole Hog (and have found that there's not much you mad lot will say no to!) we are sympathetic to genuine phobias (heights, claustrophobia, water etc) and at the end of the day want people to enjoy their race! Therefore, each challenge may be opted out of- taking the 'Piglet Option'- and a corresponding time penalty will be awarded.
Do we have to raise money for charity?
No. Whilst many competitors will wish to do so, we welcome entries from those who want to compete for their own personal satisfaction or as part of a team building exercise.
How do we go about raising money for charity should we wish to do so?
Competitors are welcome, and indeed encouraged, to raise money for charitable causes and organisations of their choosing by getting sponsored to go The Whole Hog. In 2007 a number of charities benefited from the Whole Hog race series. Please browse the 'Charity' section for more information.
I work for a charity and want to know more/get involved what should I do?
Please contact Adventure Challenge Events on 0114 233 5858 or email us at info@acefundraising.co.uk to discuss reserving places for your charity, adding your charity to the online list of those involved, or any other matter.
Can people come to watch/Support us?
Yes! The more the merrier. Although the nature of the courses is such that it is often difficult to watch the race, spectators are welcome at the start/finish lines and there are designated viewing points at various 'Challenge Zones' where supporters will be able to view the fun and take action shots! There are also refreshments available on site.
How many people constitute a team and can they be mixed sex?
Teams are to be made up of 3 competitors and can be all male, all female or mixed. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category.
How are the results calculated?
Although you do not have to, it is in your interest to stay with your team throughout the course; this not only makes the challenges easier but is also more enjoyable overall. If teams do split up for any reason, the score will be calculated as a mean time (i.e. each team member's time added together and divided by 3). Any 'Piglet Penalties' incurred will be against the individual who does not complete the challenge but then will be applied to the team as a whole.
What facilities will be available on the day?
Car parking; although we encourage teams to share transport. Refreshments, including hot and cold drinks, snacks and a hog roast. Changing facilities; note that showers may not be available at all venues so please come prepared!
What should we wear?
It is almost guaranteed that you will get wet and muddy! It is highly advisable to cover your arms and legs but wear quick drying (wicking) fabric. Sturdy trainers should also be worn.
Will there be water stations around the course?
Yes, there will be water stations provided around the course. Some competitors run with camelbacks etc but you may find these an inconvenience.
Is there an age limit?
The lower age limit is 16 years on the day of the event. Whilst there is no upper age limit as such, these events are obviously physically demanding and if you have any doubts as to your fitness we advise getting the all clear from your GP prior to entering.
Do I have to be 'Mega Fit' to enter?
No. These events are races and so clearly the more you train and the more effort you put in on the day the more you will get out of it. That said, we encourage everyone to have a go and the challenges greatly break up the time spent running. At the end of the day we want you to have fun and if that means walking between challenge zones then so be it!
Is there a closing date for entries?
We have not set a formal closing date for entries this year but we would ask you, as a courtesy, to secure your place no later than 2 weeks prior to the event. Obviously there is a great deal of organisation involved and it makes for a much smoother event if we have numbers finalised early. There is also a financial incentive to book early...
What do I get for my money?
The big question! By entering a Whole Hog race you will be a part of something totally unique. Each leg is set at a beautiful private venue, the challenges and obstacles have been designed/crafted by a dedicated Whole Hog team, there are numerous prizes available for winning teams and there may well be a few cheeky extras thrown in. These events are a perfect team building opportunity, will push you to your limits and leave you with long lasting memories.
In 2008 each competitor will also get a free Whole Hog t-shirt.
How do I book?
We want to make booking as easy as possible and therefore you can book online, by phone, by downloading the booking form (PDF) and posting it back to us.
Why haven't you answered my question?
We're sorry! If you are unable to find the answer to your question anywhere in the Whole Hog pages please drop us a line (0114 233 5858) or an email (hograce@acefundraising.co.uk)
